Electron-impact excitation of Sc II: collision strengths and effective collision strengths for fine-structure transitions
Accurate fine-structure atomic data for the Fe-peak elements are essential for interpreting astronomical spectra. There is a severe paucity of data available for Sc II, highlighted by the fact that no collision strengths are readily available for this ion. We present electron-impact excitation collision strengths and Maxwellian averaged effective collision strengths for Sc II. The collision str...
متن کاملSemiclassical calculation of oscillator-strengths
2014 Because they play a fundamental role in the calculation of bound electron stoppingpowers, photon mean free paths and electron impact-excitation cross-sections, there is a need for a convenient method to calculate oscillator strengths for highly charged ions. In this paper we describe a simple semiclassical approximation for electron matrix-elements and oscillator strengths. The method is t...
متن کاملPhotoionization cross sections and oscillator strengths for Fe
Ab initio calculations are carried out for the photoionization cross sections and oscillator strengths for Fe III in the close-coupling approximation employing the R-matrix method. A 49-state eigenfunction expansion for Fe IV, with states dominated by the ground configuration 3d and the excited configurations 3d 4s and 3d 4p , is employed to ensure an extensive treatment of autoionizing resonan...
متن کاملEnergy approach to consistent QED theory for calculation of electron-collision strengths: Ne-like ions.
An energy approach based on consistent QED theory is outlined which presents the energy of any decaying atomic state in complex form with the imaginary part responsible for different types of decays. The aim is to study, in a uniform manner, elementary processes responsible for emission-line formation in plasmas. The energy approach is generalized here for the collisional problem. Numerical res...
متن کاملOscillator strengths with pseudopotentials
The time-dependent local-density approximation (TDLDA) is shown to remain accurate in describing the atomic response of group IB elements under the additional approximation of using pseudopotentials to treat the effects of core electrons. This extends the work of Zangwill and Soven who showed the utility of the all-electron TDLDA in the atomic response problem.
